Knowing When It's Time for a Full Roof Replacement
One of the questions we are most often asked is "Do I need a roof repair or a full roof replacement?" While localized roof leaks and areas of damage can often be fixed with a roof repair, there are several signs that your existing roof system should be replaced and it's time for roofing installation instead.
- Visible damage to roofing material, including cracking, curling, discoloration, or missing shingles
- Moss or mold on the roof
- Bare shingles without the protective coating of granules
- Visibly sagging roofline
- Missing or damaged flashing, fascia, or other structural elements of the roof
- A significant roof leak or multiple roof leaks (or evidence of moisture, including water stains on your ceiling or mold in your attic)
- Your asphalt shingles roof is over 20 years old (other types of roofing tend to last longer, such as a tile or metal roof)
- For more information about the longevity of different types of roof shingles, please refer to our comprehensive guide on shingle lifespan titled, “How Long Do Roof Shingles Last?”

Best in the business
It turns out, that when they took the top layers of our old roof off, water had seeped into our rafters causing them to rot. Our fault for putting off deferred maintenance for so long. That meant that the original price they quoted us ended up tripling in price, because EVERYTHING had to be replaced.
They were professional, transparent, took the time to explain everything, and did a phenomenal job all around. We felt we were in good hands all the way through the 5 day project.
In addition to basically rebuilding our roof and pitching it slightly, they ended up having to replace our sky lights, rebuild our chimneys, replace our gutters. The workmanship was professional and expert. They also had men come into our house to patch and paint the minor ceiling marks as a result of the roof work. At the conclusion of the project, they left everything clean!
We now have a roof that is warrantied for 25 years.
We highly recommend Allied Roofing Solutions! They were worth every penny.
Thank you Lio for all your efforts and dedication!
Thank you very much
Thank you for a 5 Star service!

Our Multi-Step Full Roof Replacement Process
We are committed to ensuring your new roof system will hold up to the elements, provide utmost moisture protection, and even improve your home's appearance. To ensure this happens, we start every roofing project by tearing off the existing shingles and removing the old roof down to the wooden structure. Then we begin the full roof replacement using a six-step process that is built from the bottom up.

Leak Barrier
We use a water-resistant underlayment for added protection, particularly against ice dams, blowing rain or snow, or other harsh weather.

Roof Deck Inspection and Repair
Roof decking is critical to full roof replacements. It protects moisture from seeping into your attic while providing additional protection, especially against wind-driven rain.

Starter Strip Shingles
Starter shingles provide a consistent appearance and performance and act as a guard against wind damage.

50-year Shingles
50-year shingles offer unmatched durability and act as the first line of defense against moisture on your roof.

Cobra Attic Ventilation
We use Cobra attic ventilation to improve energy efficiency and ensure optimal moisture levels in your home.

Ridge Cap Shingles
Hip and ridge shingles are installed at the peak of the roof to protect from water infiltrating the roof.
Roofing Materials for a Full Roof Replacement
Roofing Shingles
Allied Roofing Solutions installs a range of shingle roofing options from trusted manufacturers, designed to meet different budgets, performance needs, and design preferences.
Architectural Shingles
Architectural shingles are the most common choice for residential roof replacements due to their balance of durability, appearance, and long-term value. Their layered construction creates a dimensional look while offering improved resistance to wind, moisture, and everyday wear.
Three-Tab Shingles
Three-tab shingles provide a clean, traditional appearance and are the most economical roofing option. They offer reliable, straightforward protection and are well suited for homeowners prioritizing affordability or for projects where a simple, functional roof is the primary goal.
Luxury Shingles
Luxury shingles deliver a high-end, slate-inspired appearance with enhanced thickness and weight for superior durability. Designed for homeowners seeking maximum longevity and elevated curb appeal, these shingles offer advanced weather resistance and a more refined architectural finish.
Ridge Caps and Ventilation Components
Ridge caps are specially designed shingles installed along the peak of the roof, where two slopes meet. They protect the ridge of the roof from water intrusion while also covering roof ventilation components like ridge vents, which allow hot, moist air to escape from the attic. Proper replacement of ridge caps and ventilation features help regulate attic temperature, reduce moisture buildup, and support the long-term performance of your roof.
Flashing
Roof flashing consists of thin metal pieces installed around roof transitions and penetrations, such as chimneys, valleys, skylights, and where the roof meets walls. These areas are especially prone to leaks, and aging or reused flashing is a common source of water intrusion. Replacing flashing during a full roof replacement helps ensure these vulnerable points remain sealed and watertight.
Vent Boots and Pipe Collars
Vent boots and pipe collars are the components that seal around plumbing pipes and exhaust vents that pass through the roof. They typically include rubber or flexible seals that can crack or wear down over time. Replacing them during a roof replacement helps prevent leaks around these penetrations, which are otherwise difficult to repair once the roof is complete.
Ice and Water Shield
Ice and water shield is a self-sealing waterproof membrane installed beneath the shingles in high-risk areas of the roof, such as along the eaves, in valleys, and around penetrations. It provides added protection against wind-driven rain and moisture intrusion, serving as a critical backup layer in areas most likely to experience leaks.
Underlayment
Underlayment is a protective layer installed directly over the roof deck and beneath the shingles. It acts as a continuous secondary barrier against moisture and helps protect the roof structure if water gets past the shingles. Underlayment is always replaced during a full roof replacement to ensure consistent coverage and proper installation of the new roofing system.
Roof Decking
Not every roof replacement requires new roof decking, but it’s an important component to consider when looking for a reliable roofing contractor. The roof decking, also known as roof sheathing, is the structural layer beneath the shingles that holds the roofing system in place.
During a full roof replacement, the decking is inspected after the old materials are removed. If areas show rot, moisture damage, or deterioration, selective replacement may be necessary to ensure your new roofing system is properly installed and lasts as expected. This isn’t an automatic add-on—as only compromised sections of a roof deck need to be addressed if there are concerns about the structural integrity and long-term performance of the materials.
Our team always performs a thorough roof inspection, servicing roof decking only when it helps to avoid future, costly issues so you can rest assured your replacement roof is built on a sound foundation.
Drip Edge
Drip edge is a metal flashing installed along the edges of the roof that helps guide water away from the roof deck and fascia boards. Many older roofs either lack drip edge or have outdated materials, which can allow water to seep into the roof structure. Proper drip edge installation helps protect roof edges and supports effective water runoff.
Gutters
Gutters collect and direct rainwater away from the roof and foundation, but they are not always part of a roof replacement. During the project, gutters are typically inspected to ensure they are not damaged, misaligned, or interfering with drainage. If issues are identified, adjustments or replacement gutters may be recommended to protect the new roof and manage water properly.

How Do I Choose the Right Roofing Contractor?
Choosing the right roofing contractor is one of the most important decisions in getting the best roof possible.
Here are some things to find out when interviewing and obtaining a quote from a roofing company:
- How long have they been in business?
- Be sure they have the proper license and insurance
- Check on their past work through former customers
- Get several estimates
- What happens if I’m unsatisfied with the work?
- Get financing agreements in writing
- Will they tear off my old roof?
- Are they an authorized installer?

What Causes a Roof to Fail Prematurely?
If your roof wasn’t installed correctly, has missing flashings, or hasn’t been maintained, it more than likely will fail to perform before it should. The primary reason a roof may fail prematurely is due to poor maintenance. Intentionally maintaining your roof by checking to see if there are broken tiles, if sealants have cracked or dried out, and other issues will allow you to see and address issues before they are serious threats.
How Often Does a Roof Need to be Replaced?
If a roof has been installed correctly with durable high-quality materials, it is not improbable for it to last from 20 – 30 years or even longer. The type of shingles and materials used are also factors in how long a roof will last. For example, asphalt shingles can last 15 – 30 years, wood shingles can last 20 – 25 years, rubber roofs can last 30 – 50 years, and metal roofs can last 50 – 75 years. Read our Comprehensive Guide on Shingle Lifespan to learn about the different types of roof shingles and how long each one should last on your home.

- Roof preparation and finish materials
- Labor cost per square or square foot

What Is the Best Time to Replace a Roof?
Most any time of the year is OK to replace your roof. However, that being said, choosing a time when the weather is good and the temperature is not too hot or too cold is beneficial for getting the project completed sooner. Delays due to rain, ice, or snow can add up in the winter and prolong the completion. Even though spring and fall may offer the best weather, these seasons tend to be the busiest for roofing contractors so bear that in mind when scheduling the project.
What Roofing Material Should I Use?
Reviewing roofing materials is one of the priorities when getting your roof replaced. Some of the primary considerations are weather resistance, roof pitch, durability, and cost.
Here is a list of the six of the best roofing materials:
- Asphalt shingles
- Slate
- Metal
- Wood shingles
- Clay tile
- TPO roofing for flat roofs
What Do I Need to Do to Prepare for Full Roof Replacement?
Here are some practical tips in preparing for a full roof replacement:
- Relocate vehicles
- Remove wall hangings that may be affected by vibrations
- Clear your yard
- Move patio and deck furniture away
- Protect belongings in the attic
- Remove satellite dishes and antennas
- Locate accessible power outlets for the contractors
- Prune trees and cover bushes, plants, and shrubs that are close to the house
- Prepare children for the disruption or let them stay with friends and family during the roof replacement
What Is a Roof Warranty?
Warranties may cover materials and some will cover installation by guaranteeing the roofer’s work for a limited amount of time. Typical warranties are often limited in what they cover and conditions may apply. Here are the 3 common warranties:
- Manufacturers’ Warranties – Most full roof replacements are covered by manufacturers’ or product warranties. These warranties guarantee the materials against defects or failures for the lifespan of the materials. The warranty can be voided if the materials are installed or maintained properly. You can get this information from the roofer or from the manufacturer’s website. Allied Roofing Solutions is an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor. This status means that you get a 50-year warranty on shingles and other materials and 25-year warranty on workmanship. Only clients who have Platinum Preferred contractors install, repair, or replace their roofs are eligible for this coverage, meaning that as a customer of Allied Roofing Solutions you, too, get to take part in this unparalleled protection for your home.
- Installation and Contractor Warranties – These warranties are provided by the roofer and usually offer more protection than the standard manufacturer’s warranty. This warranty is on the workmanship of the contractor. They can vary depending on the type of warranty and who is issuing it. You should ask the roofing company to put this warranty into your contract, clearly stating what is and what isn’t covered in the warranty.
- Extended Manufacturer Warranties – Leading manufacturers offer optional extended warranty coverage on new roofs installed by authorized contractors who are certified to install the roofing system according to the manufacturer’s installation requirements.
